Horror - Win 11 Installed and Messes up WSL!
Not sure how many hundreds of GBs of downloading was wasted trying to install Win 11, but, despite my best efforts to put it off, I got screwed today. Stepped away from the desk and returned to find a clunky looking UI.
Worst of all, good old WSL Terminal (MinTTY) doesn't get interactive anymore. Why? Starts up with double-click on desktop icon and then vanishes.
Autohotkey also messed up - my beloved KDE style drag/resize not working anymore - as in, not cleanly..
One cool feature (this is after I got WSL back), when I went to the Windows file-system within WSL - thinking it's a good idea to keep stuff in one place, and did an ls, I get a pop-up saying it's not a good idea to work across file systems - I'll see a loss of performance. Explained here:
In fairness, I would have saved myself a tonne of time if I'd just looked at my own blog and seen that all I had to do was update WSL within WSL.
Thinking I needed to update Ubuntu, I went to the microsoft store and tried Ubuntu - which installed something ancient. WSL still no work. Then I specifically looked for 24.04 (my listing said I had 20.04, but it was actually 22.04). I install that, and still, no luck - running WSL Terminal that is. Worst of all, if I log into one of the new Ubuntu's I don't see any of my "old" files - yes, they're there in the old 20.04 (22.04) when log in there using powershell.
Eventually, do the upgrade (sudo apt xyz) within WSL and unregister the ones I just put in today, unintentionally. Then, install WSL terminal fresh and all is good - mercifully. Why do they do this to us?
